JUST TURN UP & SEE WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT!

The Treacle Tarts WI held their first meeting in May 2014.  The reason for establishing a new WI was to be within a town central location, so as to be accessible to all ages and financial backgrounds.

The priority was, and remains, that the group is fun and sociable, and that we have strong links with other local community groups and events.  19 ladies joined at the first meeting and, three years later, we have 50 fully paid members.

The group name was proposed and voted for by the members (other suggestions being ‘The Sunny Nunnies’ or ‘The Gasbags’ – as our initial venue was on the old gas works site), but The Treacle Tarts was, by far, the favourite – a play on the fabled story of Nuneaton being a treacle town, and the ladies’ love of tarts.

Our popularity and rapidly expanding membership necessitated a change in venue, which has taken us to the Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre.  As our catchment area is within one of the most socially and economically deprived areas of the country, we feel it is important to make social events and activities as affordable as possible.

The Treacle Tarts have been inspired by the WI message ‘You can be what you want it to be’ and, as such, are learning and responding to our members with the aim of inspiring a whole new generation and community of women to join the WI.

We enjoy a massive range of activities and social events, including our darts team - ‘The Treacle Darts’, a Book Club - The Treacle Bards, a walking group - The Treacle Barks,  a women’s cycling group and a textile group - In stitches.
